| Bolsa Chica, along with the rest of Huntington Beach, CA, has some of the nation's best birding! Nearly half of the birds found in the U.S. have been seen in Huntington Beach. A fabulous 321 out of Orange County's 420 bird species were sighted here in the past decade. The birds listed here have been spotted in one or more of the following locations: The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, Huntington Beach Central Park, B.C. Regional Park, Huntington Harbor, Talbert Marsh and the Huntington Beach Wetlands, Santa Ana River [SAR], Carr Park, flood control channels, and the nearby Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge [SBNWR].
Sightings for the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve and Huntington Central Park are listed. Species lists for the other mentioned areas may be added at a later date. The symbol under the location column simply means that the species has been sighted there. Some birds such as murres and auklets, while they might have been sighted once at Bolsa Chica, are far more likely to be found on the open ocean. Abundance codes apply to the bird in its expected habitat. The seasonality and abundance data show relative abundance and approximate season and are included to help determine the likelihood of sighting a bird, assuming approximate habitat. This list was prepared by Louann Murray, Ph.D., with a lot of help from Sylvia Ranney Gallagher and Doug Willick. Reviewed by Terry Graham, Loren Hays, Victor Leipzig, Ph.D. and Phil Smith. This bird list was produced with grants from the California Coastal Conservancy, Pacific Coast Homes, and the Huntington Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau (101 Main St, Suite 2-A, Huntington Beach, CA 92648).
